In Awe of God at the Eclipse
For this fragile earth, our island home…

Dear People of God,
On Monday August 21st, we will witness a solar eclipse the likes of which has not been seen for almost one hundred years. As a people of faith, we are being given a window into the majesty and magnificence of God’s creation and of our own fragile role in it.
I have never understood how science could be understood as a threat to faith. Science, in my humble opinion, is nothing more than the careful observation and study of God’s creation. And paying careful attention to what God has made is in fact a form of devotion. It pleases God when we admire what has been created. God is like the artist who loves when people view his paintings. God is pleased when we stand in awe of creation.
There will be no better time to stand in awe of God than in the face of this cosmic event. So let us rejoice in how huge God is and how very small we are. Let us ponder the wonder and mystery of the Trinity as it is reflected in the dance between the sun, the earth and the moon. And, while protecting our eyes, let us be reminded of what a miracle it is that we exist at all.
Monday, we will witness the glory of God! Let us give thanks that we are alive to see this day.
